Machame Route Itinerary (6 Days)

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, depart for Machame Gate (1,800m). Complete registration and meet your climbing crew. Start trekking through lush rainforest with streams, colobus monkeys, and unique flora. After 4–5 hours, reach Machame Camp (3,000m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leave the forest and enter the heath zone. The trail climbs steadily with panoramic views of Shira Plateau. Trekking time 5–6 hours. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp (3,850m).

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m), crossing into the alpine desert zone. Lunch at Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m) using “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization strategy.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Tackle the Barranco Wall in the morning—a thrilling but non-technical climb. Enjoy breathtaking views at the top before descending into Karanga Valley. Short hike to Karanga Camp (3,995m) for lunch, dinner, and overnight.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp

Start summit push at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Celebrate, then descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight.

What is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro via Machame Route?

The best time for this climb is during the dry season from June to October when weather conditions are optimal. However, the mountain can be climbed year-round with proper preparation. January-March is also a good time with warmer temperatures.

What should I pack for this climb?

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige), a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and a camera. A light jacket is recommended for early morning and evening game drives. For climbing, bring warm layers, waterproof outer shell, thermal underwear, hiking boots, gaiters, gloves, and a headlamp.
