Our Mount Meru Trekking Route offers an exceptional opportunity to summit Tanzania's second highest peak. This meticulously crafted 4-day itinerary follows the only official route to Socialist Peak (4,566m), taking you through diverse ecosystems from lush rainforest to alpine desert.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru provides a more intimate trekking experience with fewer crowds, abundant wildlife sightings, and the same breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro. Our expert guides ensure your safety and comfort while sharing their deep knowledge of the mountain's geology, flora, and fauna. This is not just a trek—it's a comprehensive adventure through one of East Africa's most beautiful landscapes.
After early morning pickup from your Arusha hotel, travel to Momella Gate (1,500 m) in Arusha National Park. Begin your trek through the lush montane forest, where you'll encounter giraffes, buffalo, and elephants grazing near the trail. As you ascend, the landscape transitions to grassland with panoramic views of the park. Your experienced guide will share insights about the mountain's geology and the local Maasai culture. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) in the afternoon, settle in, and enjoy a hot meal while watching the sunset over Kilimanjaro. This first day is designed for gentle acclimatization with a moderate 1,000m elevation gain.
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before ascending through montane forest into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the saddle between Mount Meru's two peaks. Along the way, you'll pass through heather and giant lobelia plants, with increasingly spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. Your guide will explain the unique ecology of this transition zone and point out rare bird species. Arrive at Saddle Hut (3,570 m) by early afternoon, giving you ample time to rest and acclimatize. In the afternoon, embark on an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m), which significantly increases your chances of summiting successfully. Return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an early night, as you'll begin your summit push at midnight.
Your summit attempt begins at midnight with a hot drink and light snack. Begin the steep climb up the rocky ridge toward Rhino Point (3,800 m), where you'll take a brief rest. Continue along the exposed ridge to Cobra Point (4,350 m), where the terrain becomes more technical. The final push to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) is challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking views as the sun rises over Kilimanjaro and the Meru Crater. Celebrate at the summit with photos before beginning your descent. Return to Saddle Hut for a well-deserved breakfast, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight. This day involves approximately 12-14 hours of hiking with a total elevation gain of 1,000m and loss of 2,000m.
After a well-earned rest, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before beginning your final descent. The trail winds through the beautiful montane forest, where you're likely to spot more wildlife including colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and colorful bird species. This relaxed descent (approximately 10 km) allows you to reflect on your achievement while enjoying the lush surroundings. Your guide will share stories about the Maasai people who consider Mount Meru sacred. Arrive at Momella Gate by mid-morning, where you'll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest at your hotel, concluding your unforgettable Mount Meru adventure.
