Depart Arusha for Londrossi Gate (2 hrs drive). Begin trek through lush rainforest with monkeys and streams. 3–4 hrs hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp (3,000m).
Mti Mkubwa Camp (Camping)
Trek 4–5 hrs through heath and moorland with giant lobelias. Panoramic views of Mt Meru. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,850m).
Shira 1 Camp (Camping)
Climb high, sleep low. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m). Crucial acclimatization day (6–7 hrs hike).

Scramble the Barranco Wall, then traverse alpine desert to Karanga Camp (3,995m). Short 3–4 hrs hike, perfect for acclimatization.

The best time for this climb is during the dry season from June to October when weather conditions are optimal. However, the mountain can be climbed year-round with proper preparation. January-March is also a good time with warmer temperatures.
Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige), a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and a camera. A light jacket is recommended for early morning and evening game drives. For climbing, bring warm layers, waterproof outer shell, thermal underwear, hiking boots, gaiters, gloves, and a headlamp.
